Funding Clean Energy: A Guide to Australian Solar Incentives, Zero-Interest Loans, and Financing

By Brendan Bostock | 11 Aug 2026

TL;DR: Accessing renewable energy in Australia is supported by multiple financial pathways, including NSW's July 2025 solar battery rebate, CORENA's zero-interest community loans, the CEFC’s concessional senior debt for mid-scale projects, and private finance options like Solar Link Australia’s $1.99-a-day programs.

Government Incentives and NSW Battery Adoption

Reducing the upfront cost of equipment is a key driver of solar and battery adoption across Australia. In New South Wales, the introduction of the state-sponsored solar battery rebate in July 2025 helped accelerate residential battery installations. By August 2026, 88,118 home battery systems had been installed in Greater Sydney, representing 4.58% of all households in the metropolitan area.

With 508,683 Sydney households owning solar systems (26.44% of homes), about 17% of these installations now feature integrated battery storage. These figures demonstrate how targeted financial incentives can encourage households to add energy storage, helping them manage their energy use and support grid stability.

CORENA’s Non-Profit Zero-Interest Revolving Model

For community groups, social enterprises, and non-profit organizations, commercial loans can be difficult to secure. CORENA (Community Revolving Energy Fund) addresses this challenge through an innovative revolving fund model. CORENA takes public donations and converts them into interest-free loans for climate projects, helping community organizations transition to clean energy.

As these loans are repaid using the savings from lower utility bills, the money is returned to the fund to finance new projects. This allows every dollar donated to be used multiple times. By August 2026, the fund's achievements included:

  • Donations Received: $1,023,302
  • Zero-Interest Loans Granted: $2,003,268
  • Solar Projects Funded: 1,383 kW
  • Battery Storage Funded: 168 kWh
  • Estimated Grid Electricity Avoided: 8,443 MWh
  • Project Carbon Emissions Prevented: 5,902 tonnes

CORENA loans fund a wide range of projects, including solar panels, batteries, energy efficiency audits, heating and cooling upgrades, LED lighting retrofits, heat pump hot water systems, induction cooktops, and electric vehicles (such as community buses, cars, and delivery vans).

Concessional Debt for Mid-Scale Commercial Initiatives

Mid-scale clean energy projects (typically up to 5MW in capacity) represent the "missing middle" between residential rooftop solar and utility-scale installations. These projects can connect to the grid quickly, but developers often face higher transaction costs and limited access to commercial financing.

To address this gap, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) committed $100 million to Infradebt to back the Distribution Connected Accelerator Program (DCAP). The program provides concessional senior debt financing to reduce financial barriers for mid-scale developers. This funding is expected to support up to 16 hybrid solar, battery, and battery retrofit projects, helping them reach operation and begin construction by 2027.

Commercial and Residential Retail Financing

For individual homeowners who may not qualify for government rebates or community loans, private solar providers offer flexible payment options to reduce upfront costs.

Solar Link Australia, an Australian-owned company operating since 2010, offers "Install Now Pay Later" financing packages starting from $1.99 per day. This allows homeowners to install a custom solar and battery system designed to supplement their existing energy plan, helping them lower their utility bills without a large upfront capital investment.

Key Takeaways

  • Rebate-Driven Storage Growth: The NSW battery rebate introduced in July 2025 has supported 88,118 battery installations across Greater Sydney.
  • Revolving Community Capital: CORENA has turned $1.02 million in public donations into over $2 million in zero-interest loans, helping non-profits lower their energy bills.
  • Broad Technology Coverage: CORENA’s interest-free loans fund solar, battery storage, energy efficiency upgrades, heat pumps, and electric vehicles.
  • Concessional Financing for Mid-Scale Projects: The CEFC’s $100 million commitment to Infradebt provides senior concessional debt to help mid-scale renewable projects connect to the grid faster.
  • Affordable Retail Options: Homeowners can access "Install Now Pay Later" finance plans starting at $1.99 per day to reduce their utility bills immediately.
