Two things to confirm before relying on that.
Which module revisions your inverter and firmware support, in writing. Module generations are not always interchangeable within a stack, and a mismatch surfaces as a communication fault at commissioning.
How long the module you are buying will remain available. Modular expansion is only worth what the supply chain is worth in year five.
Also check the inverter's maximum supported battery capacity at the quoting stage. Expansion cannot exceed it, and replacing an undersized inverter later costs more than the margin you saved by choosing it.
Performance
Round-trip efficiency on models like the Smile 5 sits around 95%, meaning roughly five percent of what you store is lost getting it back out. That is competitive and worth confirming for the specific model quoted, since figures vary across a range.
Cell chemistry is lithium iron phosphate, the right choice for a wall-mounted battery in Australia. LiFePO4 tolerates heat better than nickel-based chemistry and handles daily full charging without the degradation that punishes other lithium types.
Monitoring runs through a mobile app showing generation, consumption and battery state, with alerts and remote diagnostics. That is what tells you whether the system performs as quoted, and lets an installer diagnose a fault without a site visit.
Warranty on the Smile 5 is 10 years. Read what it guarantees: a capacity floor at ten years or a stated energy throughput, whichever comes first. That throughput clause is what matters if you join a virtual power plant, because VPP cycling can reach the limit years before the calendar does.
Retrofitting to Existing Solar
The hybrid inverter is designed to work with an existing array, which suits the common case of adding storage some years after installing panels.
Confirm two things. That your existing array is large enough to actually fill the battery alongside household daytime draw, because an oversized battery behind an undersized array never fills. And whether your current solar inverter stays or gets replaced, because that changes the quote substantially.
What to Weigh Against It

Installation quality. More decisive than the hardware. Your first call in year four goes to the installer, not to Alpha ESS. Use a Clean Energy Council accredited installer familiar with this product, and ask whether they have processed a warranty claim on one.
Brand depth. Alpha ESS is established and it is not Tesla or Sungrow in terms of Australian installed base. That affects how many local installers know the product well, which matters for both installation and service.
Should You Buy One?
Reasonable choice if you want to start with modest storage and extend later, you value an integrated single-supplier system, and a competent local installer is familiar with the range.
Less compelling if you want maximum output for whole-home backup, where higher-output units do better, or if you would rather keep battery and inverter separate so a failure in one does not implicate the other.
Whichever way you go, size it to your evening consumption rather than your daily total. Your retailer holds interval data showing exactly when you draw power, it costs nothing to request, and it is the number the entire system should be designed around. Capacity that never discharges never pays for itself.
